Who is Shorting the Troops?
Not Congress

The Bush lie machine is cranking up again. W wants to veto the current emergency authorization bill, and then blame the lack of funds on the Democratic House and Senate. Well lets look at a few facts. W has consistently shorted the troops.

He has not asked for funding of the military and the veterans' medical systems at the level required by the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. We can see this from the revelations at Walter Reed Hospital and at Veterans' Hospitals around the country. While we were not looking, W was trying to save a little tax money for his millionaire friends.

This is not the first time that W has shorted the troops. The first thing he and Rummy did was not send enough troops to Iraq. To secure Kuwait, George W H Bush sent 500 000 troops to Iraq. The Persian Gulf War had a smaller mission and more troops. W and Rummy decided that 120 000 troops were enough; that is he thought he could pull off a bigger mission and fewer troops. After all Rummy was the "transformation" genius. Rummy could pull off a war with fewer troops, who cares what the generals say, just push them a little harder. So W first shorted the troops by not sending enough of them to do the mission in Iraq.

Next, W shorted the troops by not spending enough on reconstruction in Iraq. If the Bush administration had spent enough on reconstruction to get the power back on, insurgents would have had a more difficult time recruiting for a civil war. If getting Iraq up and running would require more money, he didn't want to pay with American dollars; W wanted the Iraqis to pay for what we broke. He wanted to fight this war on the cheap. Was that really supporting the troops?. NO!

So when Bush vetoes the emergency spending authorization bill, it will be another case of Bush shorting the troops. Congress is just exercising its constitutional power to set the scope of the war. Bush is just trying to shift the blame for shorting the troops one more time.

Opinion

There was an letter in the Sherman Democrat on Sunday 11/28/04 about the protest at Austin College concerning fraud in the last election. I too do not like burning the American flag. I think that there are better ways to express your opinion. It is however the Constitutional right of the protesters to do that. It is protected both by the Freedom of Speech, and the Right to Protest. As Americans it is our patriotic responsibility to protect these rights.

A second point is that the protest has been successful. If the protestors had burned picket signs, a copy of the Constitution, a voter registration form, or a voter registration card, there would not have been as much discussion. They have effectively raised the issue to public discourse. For this I praise these young Americans.

There has been no in depth discussion about the issue of fraud in the last election.

· What evidence is there that election fraud occurred outside of Grayson County?

·        What happened inside Grayson County?

o Were there any local instances of fraud?

o       Were there any mistakes made by local election officials?

These questions should be publicly discussed.
